Ph.D. Student Opportunity - MIT/WHOI Joint Program (starting Fall 2012)
Population Connectivity / Ocean Modeling

We are looking for a highly motivated Ph.D. student to join a team of scientists in the Biology Department at WHOI to work on modeling marine population connectivity in a tropical ecosystem. Research will focus on developing reliable predictors of population connectivity from a range of habitat and oceanographic metrics that influence larval dispersal and settlement. A suite of tools, including a population model, a coupled biological-hydrodynamic model, and GIS-based spatial analysis will be developed. More information on this project is available here.

Detailed information about the MIT/WHOI graduate program and application guidelines can be found on the MIT/WHOI Joint Program website. Before contacting us, please review the Admissions Section (including the FAQs and the Financial Support Options). Additional information is provided in the MIT/WHOI Joint Program Biological Oceanography Handbook. Applications will be due January 2012 and students must have completed the GRE (and TOEFL for international students).

Interested applicants are encouraged to send a letter and resume detailing interests, previous research experience, and education to Dr. Julie Kellner (jkellner@whoi.edu) and Dr. Rubao Ji (rji@whoi.edu).

Additional details on the project collaborators are available at:
Dr. Julie Kellner, WHOI
Dr. Rubao Ji, WHOI
Dr. Simon Thorrold, WHOI
Dr. Michael Neubert, WHOI

General Information

A detailed description of WHOI's educational opportunities is available at the WHOI Academic Programs Office website.
If you are interested in the research described on this website, feel free to contact me with a description of your background and interests along with a CV.

Undergraduate Students
Undergraduate students interested in conducting summer research projects should apply to the WHOI Summer Student Fellowship Program or the Woods Hole Partnership Educational Program. Both of these programs provide financial support and housing, and have application deadlines in February. Students whose home institutions support externships during the school year are also encouraged to contact me.

Graduate Students
Students interested in graduate studies at WHOI can apply to the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography. Before contacting me, please review the Admissions Section (including the FAQs). Additional information is provided in the MIT/WHOI Joint Program Biological Oceanography Handbook. Potential applicants should also consider investigating additional sources of funding such as the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (deadline is usually mid-November). Note that the application deadline for the Joint Program is January 5, 2012 and students must have completed the GRE (and TOEFL for international students).

Postdocs
WHOI offers 18-month postdoctoral scholarships that support postdocs to pursue their research interests. Interested applicants should also consider pursuing external funding opportunities such as the Smith Conservation Research Fellowship or NSF postdoctoral research opportunities such as the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biology, the Ocean Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability Fellowship, and the Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. I encourage postdoctoral applicants to contact me about current research opportunities in the lab.
